Last week 60 Minutes had a good story on Ransomware (Ransomware locks up a victims files until a Ransom is paid).
When the Ransom is paid, encryption keys are provided to unlock the files.

Why pay a Criminal?
As I watch, questions running through my head were answered, like 60 Minutes quite often has a knack of doing:
- Why in the hell would anybody pay a crook. In a case where both the primary and backup files are locked, it may be the only option for the business.
- And second, how can you trust the encryption keys will be provided when you pay the Ransom? Viability of their Business Model is predicated on the crooks living up to their word (e.g. if they don't provide the keys or continue to keep hitting the same targets, ransom revenue will not keep flowing).
How it Works
As the story explained, this is not a criminal sitting at a desktop banging away trying to break into a system. This is something the Cyber Criminals create and unleash on the internet and sit back and wait until vulnerabilities are uncovered - so any business can be targeted, regardless of size.
Data Breach Insurance and Ransomware
I mention this story because a good Data Breach Policy will pay a Ransom Demand if your Business is struck by Ransomware as well as the cost of Investigation provided by Forensic experts.
